Pokémon is not as simple as it may appear. In fact, there are tons and tons of game mechanics that, when utilized properly, can make a big difference. Here are some of the key ones:

Damage Multipliers

  • STAB (Same Type Attacks Bonus): If a Pokémon uses an attack of the same type as its own, they will receive a 50% damage bonus.
  • Type Advantages: Every Pokémon has a type and has certain strengths and weaknesses against other types. Depending on the attack and the defending Pokémon, the damage can range from 0% to 400%.
  • Weather/Area Effects: Attacks such as Rain Dance or Sunny Day give a damage bonus to all attacks of its respective type.
  • Critical Hits: Any offensive attack has a 6.25% chance of doing double damage. This is known as a critical hit. Certain moves can increase this chance. A critical hit is not affected by any Attack Stat or Special Attack Stat debuffs in your Pokémon, nor Defense Stat and Special Defense Stat buffs on the target.

Experience Multipliers

Miscellaneous

  • Shiny Pokémon: Any wild Pokémon will have a 0.0125% chance of being shiny.
  • Status Effects: Certain attacks can cause a variety of status effects. These include Burn, Paralysis, Freeze, Sleep, and Confusion.
  • Shadow Pokémon: In specific achievements, some Mystery Gifts and the Game Corner, you can get Shadow Pokémon. The only differences to common Pokémon is being able to learn the TM move Shadow Rush and the appeal, with a shadow aura around it.
